I just wanted to take a quick minute to express my thanks for the wonderful world of modern medicine.
I have come to realize that I have taken many things for granted, one in particular is my blood type. The average person does not think about this very often but while I was pregnant it was constantly on my mind. I have type A- blood type. Zach has O+. This may not seem like a big deal but because I am a negative blood type and Zach is a positive there was a high chance that my body could have rejected baby Claire depending on what her blood type was.
This was not figured out by scientist very long ago. I think it was around WWII. My great grandma had this problem. She was able to have one child (my grandpa) and then every other time she was pregnant her body would kill off the fetus and she had many miscarriages and still births.
Today if the mothers blood type and the babies are different all they need to do is give you a shot. One when you are 36 weeks and one after you deliver. This keeps your body from identifying any future pregnancies as harmful and allows you to carry out your pregnancy to full term.
Although the shots that I received were quite painful and left me sore for a few days I am grateful that I could receive that medicine so that I can continue grow my family. How grateful I am for those scientists and doctors who figured that out. I feel so blessed to live in a time when all these amazing resources are available to us. My heart is filled with gratitude.
