So last night was the first day of orientation for the SUU students. As an ambassador Zach was there to greet, meet and tell people where to go and what to do. I was graciously invited to attend the evenings events which included a FREE dinner and an opportunity to listen to a motivational speaker. Of course I was not going to miss a FREE dinner, so I tagged along. The SUU campus is beautiful, the people were friendly and for a FREE dinner the food wasn't that bad. The brownies were my favorite!
After dinner we gathered in the gym to await our speaker for the night. His name is Marlin (like the fish from Finding Nemo) Smith. Boy did this guy have energy! Marlin has a book called 212 degrees. In the book he talks about how at 211 degrees water can boil but at 212 degrees it can create steam. His main point was basically what will you do to push yourself to the extra degree and get what you want out of life (job you love, happy family, etc) He continued with his energetic speech and came to a point where he said "As long as you're not gonna die I say go for it". (Now, I agree with that statement as long as you are not talking about drugs, alcohol, etc) But what he was referring to was choices that we make in life that can ultimately affect our long term goals.... like applying for a job you don't think you are qualified for or asking a girl/guy out that you think is out of your league. He was just talking about pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and not letting fear get in the way, because the worst thing that can happen is for someone to say no. He continued to speak energetically and at the end of his speech he told us something that we should remember: REPOH. This was not an abbreviation for repossession. It stands for: Repeat, Easy, Pleasure, Often, Habit. Part of his speech was about creating good habits that we will use in the future. His example was about achieving good grades in school, but he said that if you REPEAT something then it can become EASY and then can become something that you enjoy (PLEASURE), then you will repeat that OFTEN and then it becomes a HABIT.
Marlins' speech was good and in a lot of ways he could have tied in the gospel (I'm not sure if he is a member). But what I do know is that I was surrounded by SUU students that were excited about school, about meeting new people and about their future! It was so fun so see these students afterwards talking to new people and stepping out of their comfort zone. I think Marlin did a pretty good job with his speech.
Side Note: After getting rejected for most of the jobs I applied for I stepped out of my comfort zone and decided to call a few of the clinics around town to see if they were hiring. (I was following a lead a lady had told me about at a Relief Society activity) So I called the clinic and the nice lady told me to come down and hand in my resume. So I did, by the time I got home I had received a call to come in for an interview! So I went back a little while later had the interview and I was told that I would be contacted if I was to have a second interview. About and hour later I had a call to come back for a second interview!!! So this coming Wednesday I will have my second interview. Cross your fingers and say a prayer that I get this job!!!!
Anyone who doesn't hire you is a fool. How's that for an opinion? Can't wait to see you in September!
